While vitamin D plays a key role in calcium absorption and maintaining bone health, it’s not enough on its own to diagnose or treat bone weakness.

Why Vitamin D Alone Is Not Enough ?
Vitamin D deficiency can contribute to bone loss — but weak bones (osteopenia or osteoporosis) can also result from several other factors, including:
  • Age-related hormonal changes
  • Genetic factors
  • Long-term use of certain medications (such as steroids)
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Poor calcium intake
  • Smoking or excessive alcohol use
Even if you take vitamin D and calcium, you could still be losing bone density if these other risk factors are at play. That’s why getting an accurate diagnosis is crucial.

The Importance of a DEXA Scan

A DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scan is the gold standard test for assessing bone mineral density (BMD).

2. Osteopenia (T-score between -1.0 and -2.5)
Focus: Slow or prevent further bone loss
Recommendations:
  • Continue vitamin D and calcium supplementation
  • Exercise regularly (especially strength and balance training)
  • Address modifiable risk factors (smoking, low body weight, poor diet)
  • In high-risk patients (e.g., postmenopausal women or those with prior fractures), your doctor may prescribe:
    • Bisphosphonates
    • Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs)

3. Osteoporosis (T-score ≤ -2.5)
Focus: Strengthen bones and reduce fracture risk
Recommendations:
  • Maintain calcium and vitamin D supplementation as a baseline
  • Prescription medications may include:
    • Bisphosphonates (e.g., alendronate, risedronate)
    • Denosumab (for those intolerant to bisphosphonates)
    • Teriparatide or abaloparatide (bone-building agents for severe cases)
    • Romosozumab (for certain postmenopausal women)
  • Incorporate fall prevention strategies and lifestyle modifications
  • Repeat DEXA scans every 1–2 years to monitor progress

Ultrasound in Pregnancy / Fetal Ultrasound / Fetal Sonography

Ultrasound is the safest investigation during pregnancy and with advancing science it has become a routine test to evaluate the fetus/baby.

Many Patients are worried and confused about what will be the best time for ultrasound. Timing of ultrasound is very important to obtain proper information and follow up the pregnancy.

Note: Pregnant patient must have her valid ID proof & a valid prescription with sign and stamp of the referring doctor.

Ideally the timings to follow should be:
  1. Documenting and Dating the Pregnancy – around 8-9 weeks (from LMP)
  2. NT scan – around 12 weeks (from EDD / LMP) 
            * Early Anomaly Scan – around 15-16 weeks (if needed based on previous ultrasound)
  3. Anomaly Scan / Level II  +  Fetal Echocardiography / Fetal Echo – around 19-22 weeks
               * Follow up scan for specific structure – around 24-26 weeks (if needed based on previous ultrasound)
               * Fetal Echocardiography alone – around 22-25 weeks 
  4. Growth scan (always with Doppler) – around 28-30 weeks
  5. Follow up Growth scan (always with Doppler) – around 35 weeks
  6. Growth scan monitoring (always with Doppler) – as required based on any problem in previous scans

A  scan may also be required in between based on any specific complain of the mother or if the doctor feels there is some complication or the doctor needs some specific information regarding the progress of pregnancy.
